The Intergalactic Adventures of Max Cloud, 2020
When a video game enthusiast named Sarah is transported into her favorite game, she
finds herself on an intergalactic prison, home to the most dangerous villains in the
galaxy. The only way to escape the game is to complete it. Teaming up with space hero
Max Cloud, Sarah battles the terrifying planet while her best friend, Cowboy, controls the
game from her bedroom in Brooklyn.
Max Cloud
Sarah’s realization her life is on the line,
which is as much a buzzkill as her
realization that every time she’s selected
Max as her avatar, she’s unwittingly
selected a misogynist pig redeemed only
by his S-tier combat skills. Swarmed by
space ninjas aboard their inoperable ship,
Max goes sickhouse on them with moves
straight out of The Raid, rendered
deceptively cartoonish through the gaming
medium. He pins baddies to ceilings with
knives to the chin, decapitates them with
closing doors, or slashes them to ribbons.
“I scared them off,” Max roars after one
such melee, “with an act of pure violence!”
Scott always made sure the action is
good.
Max Cloud is a very different sort of film for Scott, but of course, there are some good action set pieces as well
to keep the fan base happy, and obviously, I get to do something a bit different.
The fight with the space ninjas, was harder to film because it wasn't a big corridor, it was the size that it looked.
Scott: “You've got to get that wide angle lens on there and be aware of where the camera is. It's no good
stabbing someone in the face if you're blocking the camera. It's not just about what you're doing, it's about what
the camera sees. It's an illusion, and in a tight environment like that, you've got to be very precise. And of
course, there are longer takes, because it's a oner with hidden cuts, but you're still dong prolonged sequences,
longer than you normally would. All the sets were in a studio, but that particular bit was outside and it was
December, and it was very cold in there.”
The most memorable experiences in making the movie was wearing that costume.
Scott: “having two costume ladies trying to force me into it. It was quite tight, and I had to lay off the coffee so
that I didn't need to undress myself before lunch. You couldn't get the arms in over the shoulders, and it was
hard get your feet into it, as well, because the bottoms, to even get your foot through was an ordeal. And then
to stretch it over was difficult, so you needed help. You could kind of get it off on your own, but you didn't want
to rip it either, so you needed help.”
With Max Cloud Scott just wants to entertain people.
”I want people to watch my movies and have a good time watching them and be entertained. I mean, I don't
think they're going to take away any social messages or anything like that. Just want to switch your brain off.
You know, obviously the times we're in at the minute, it's quite anxiety-inducing. It's just switch off, enjoy the
ride, have fun and forget about your troubles and your strife for a bit.”
“I'm Max Cloud, and I don't have time for death!”
“Who wants the first dance?”
“That guy's head came
completely off his shoulders.”
