Cain Burgess is a prisoner who escapes police custody after his mother’s death and visits a private bar, holding its members hostage as he starts revealing his past and what led to him becoming a violent fighter.
Cain Burgess was in prison for someone else’s crimes and for seven years he dreamed of freedom. Every day he thought that he would someday be released, and would take revenge on his offenders. The hero of the film “Avengement” every year became stronger and tempered his iron will in the dark prison walls. One day, he manages to neutralize the two guards, and escape from custody. Once free, Cain hurries into the lair of the criminal community to pay off all who have destroyed his future.
Scott Adkins plays Cain, whose biblical name reflects a key plot element. As the story begins, he’s a hardened, visibly scarred prison convict who’s been granted a furlough to see his dying mother. Unfortunately, he arrives too late: She’s already dead and laid out on a slab. Incensed, he takes the opportunity to escape, proving in the process that the six-man security detail assigned to him wasn’t nearly enough.
Cain makes his way to a secret London pub populated only by a female bartender and a small gang of criminals led by Hyde (Nick Moran), who doesn’t recognize him at first because of Cain’s extensive facial scarring. Holding the men at gunpoint, Cain proceeds to regale them with the tale of how he ended up this way. He was sent to prison because of a fatal accident that occurred while he was performing a criminal assignment for his loan shark brother (Craig Fairbrass) who promptly betrayed him. During the ensuing seven years, Cain had to repeatedly fight for his life, being the subject of brutal attacks that included having his jaw smashed and homemade napalm being thrown in his face. After the former incident, he was outfitted with a metal teeth.
Avengement is a brawny, ultra-violent, muscle-bound revenge throwback that you’ve seen and heard before: A good kid wronged by his underworld kingpin brother turns to murder against his will and only wants to spill the blood of those who have so wronged him. Avengement is a nonstop endurance run of bone crunching, blood letting beatdowns and brawls. Each one is furious, well choreographed, and punctuated with hits and snaps that rattle your guts. Blood squirts across walls, floors, splashes the camera. Knives, shivs, pipes, wooden planks, and even dinner trays are used with speed and ferocity in fast, mostly all-against-one fights. There are multiple curb stomps, a splash of homemade napalm, and an exploding head to keep you on your toes as Avengement veers from one action setpiece to another.
Now, the thing that makes you admire this film the most is Adkins himself. Avengement is often mentioned as Adkins best acting performance yet. StoryBone Crunching
