Day Shift

2022, Directed by J.J. Perry

A hard-working, blue-collar dad who just wants to provide a good life for his quick-witted 10-year-old daughter. His mundane San Fernando Valley pool cleaning job is a front for his real source of income: hunting and killing vampires.

Bud Jablonski is a pool cleaner. After he sees a man leave a nearby home, he quietly breaks into the house and is confronted with two vampires – an older woman and one who is younger. After a long fight, he kills both vampires and extracts their teeth. Bud is actually a vampire hunter. He makes a living by selling vampire fangs. Fangs from older vampires called “Elders” are worth more.

Bud attempts to sell his teeth to Troy at the pawnshop but the offered prices aren’t high enough to pay for his financial troubles. Bud desperately needs the money because his ex-wife plans to move to Florida with her daughter. Her private school fees are too high. Bud has to return to the vampire hunting a**ociation to pay tuition and to finance braces for his daughter.

He was previously kicked out because of his aggressive and risky hunting style, which was in violation of many of the union’s protocols. Bud is given another chance to work for the union with John Elliot, a friend who is highly respected in the union. Bud is required to work only the Day Shift. This does not pay as much and he is also supervised by Seth, a union representative, who is charged with looking for and reporting any violations by Bud.

Scott Adkins in Day Shift

Bud’s vampire hunting escapades get quickly out of hand, especially with the arrival of the Nazarian brothers, as they work together to take down a vampire nest.

Scott Adkins plays one of the Nazarian, with his character’s Eastern European origins being a tribute to the importance such characters have had in the arc of his career. The Nazarian brothers are Russian, and characters of Eastern European origin have been something of a staple in the career of Scott Adkins. The Undisputed franchise is the most well-known of these. Other movies like The Tournament, The Expendables 2, and The Brothers Grimsby have also seen Adkins portray Eastern European characters, and the point that Day Shift comes in his career makes Diran Nazarian a tip of the hat to all of them.

Director J.J. Perry previously was a fight choreographer on Undisputed 2: Last Man Standing, which debuted Boyka to the world. With that film being the point where Adkins began to really attract significant attention from action fans for his incredible abilities as a martial artist, Diran Nazarian being Russian is more important than it initialluy seems. In a subtle way, the nationality of the Nazarian brothers is Day Shift pays tribute to the early days of Adkins’s early career.

On internet now Day Shift fans are demanding a “Bros Grimm” Nazarian Brothers spin-off on Netflix.

Fans are arguing that the best scene of the whole movie is when the main characters Bub Jablonski end up teaming up with the Nazarian Brothers to take out a vampire ‘hive’ that is infesting a housing estate.
